Unlike anything else in this portfolio, this project is more than just a job; it's deeply personal.
Sertãopunk is an artistic movement that began in literature. The idea was conceived by myself and two other Black writers from the Northeast (G. G. Diniz and Alec Silva) as a way to reimagine the Brazilian Northeast within speculative fiction (science fiction, horror, or fantasy), highlighting its unique identity and celebrating its greatest strengths.
It all started in 2019 when we introduced the concept to the literary world, proposing an aesthetic that blends Afrofuturism, magical realism, and solarpunk – three genres that resonate with the Northeast's most powerful aspects: ancestry, beliefs, spirituality, and natural forces.
With the free release of our manifesto, "Sertãopunk: Histórias de um Nordeste do amanhã," on Amazon (now unavailable), we garnered over 1200 reviews during its publication period and attracted significant attention. The movement evolved from a mere idea into a recognized Brazilian and Northeastern subgenre of fiction, even earning a mention in the official Wikipedia article about Brazilian science fiction.
The movement also caught the eye of American writer Charlie Jane Anders, a Hugo and Nebula Award winner and a New York Times bestseller, who featured Sertãopunk in her newsletter.

The movement gained significant momentum within literature, inspiring numerous literary works by Northeastern authors who embraced Sertãopunk as a powerful vehicle for telling their own stories.

Sertãopunk transcended its literary origins and permeated the academic sphere. Over the past four years, researchers both in Brazil and abroad have published numerous articles, research projects, monographs, master's theses, and even incorporated the movement into classroom activities with high school students.
The movement has been the subject of panels, workshops, and lectures across Brazil and around the world. We've shared the vision of Sertãopunk in the United States, Portugal, and Austria, and were honored to be the focus of a roundtable discussion in England. In 2022, we led a workshop on the movement at Sesc Pompéia, bringing together individuals from all regions and empowering them to create their own Sertãopunk narratives.

The expansion beyond literature continued, inspiring musical works such as the album "Space Opera" by Ceará artist Arthur Cesar, and the short film "2020," written and directed by Oziel Hebert. Released in 2021, "2020" was screened at the Cinema do Dragão in Fortaleza as part of the "Olhar do Ceará" showcase and is available for viewing on YouTube.
